Darius, affectionately known as “DJ”, was shot multiple times in the parking lot of Vireo Apartments at 12212 Tidwell Rd. on February 3.
According to his mother, Brenetta Francis, the family had just arrived home shortly after 6 p.m. and DJ realized he had left his jacket and a few other items in the car. The family lives on the third floor of the building and the child walked to the parking lot.
Francis said about a minute later they heard gunshots. Her eldest son ran downstairs and found his baby brother dead. He had been shot in the chest.
When deputies from the Harris County Constable’s Office 3 arrived on the scene, her family was attempting to administer CPR. Paramedics transported DJ to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses say they saw what they believe to be a teenager with a short afro fleeing the scene on foot. He wore a white shirt and dark sweatpants. The suspect ran north through the compound and jumped over a wooden fence, investigators said.
Francis believes the suspect was trying to steal his son.
As of February 8, the shooter was still at large.
