Government says Gotabaya Rajapaksa does not use public funds for spending abroad


Colombo, Aug 17 (AdaDerana) — Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa spends on his current overseas trips with his personal funds and not government funds, the Government Information Department said today.

In a statement, he said former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa does not spend government money for his expenses abroad and that all such expenses will be borne by the former President’s personal funds.

At the press conference held today (16) in the auditorium of the Government Department of Public Information to announce the weekly cabinet decisions, reporters had raised a question about the former’s overseas spending President, who is currently in Thailand after brief stays in the Maldives and Singapore.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena’s response that former and current presidents are legally entitled to certain privileges, was reported by some media in a way that insinuated that public funds were being spent on the former president’s foreign expenses, according to the communicated.

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa informed that the reports published by some media on his expenses abroad are incorrect and pointed out that his personal funds are spent on all expenses.
