The abduction of an 11-year-old boy in Horamavu was orchestrated by a pregnant neighbor who needed money to cover her delivery costs.
Hennur Police, investigating the case, discovered that Mangita, 24, the boy’s neighbor, is the main accused.
According to the police, Mangita is seven months pregnant and did not have enough money for her medical examination and delivery.
Bheemashankar S Guled, DCP (East) said Mangita is from Bihar and came to Bengaluru a few years ago. She worked as a cleaner in an apartment.
Another defendant, Durga, 47, who had kidnapped Dhammadeep is also a housekeeper in the same apartment.
“Mangita is pregnant and needed money for her medical expenses related to her delivery. She planned to kidnap the boy so she could extort money from his parents. She took help from her friend Gourav, who is on the run,” Guled said.
She had offered Rs 10 lakh to Durga to kidnap the boy and keep him captive.
Mangita introduced Durga to victim Dhammadeep a few months ago. Durga used to talk to Dhammadeep when he was playing in front of her house to gain her trust.
So she went to pick up the boy around 5.30 p.m., under the pretext of taking him to the swimming pool, but left him with his brother-in-law Gourav Singh, 50, on a farm in Jigani. Singh is the farm’s security guard.
Singh was told to keep the boy safe for 10-12 days until his parents arranged the money. Mangita had offered to pay Singh a good sum to take care of the boy.
Singh also demanded a ransom from Dhammadeep’s mother, Ashwini.
The police rescued the boy and arrested Singh, Durga and Mangita. Efforts are underway to nab Mangita’s male friend Gourav, police said.
