$1.7 million distributed for Halton Council salaries and expenses in 2021

It’s that time of year when Halton’s number calculators report how much regional politicians earn.

The latest staff report reveals that $1,636,128 was spent on council member salaries, benefits and expenses throughout 2021, with an additional $36,487 distributed for certain local councils on which councilors sit and d ‘others.

Regional chairman Gary Carr was the council’s highest earner and brought in $233,448 while councilors received between $53,000 and just over $61,000 each in salaries and benefits.

Halton also covers salaries, benefits and expenses incurred by the Halton Regional Police Service Board, which totaled $56,519. Just over $30,000 was paid to Halton council members for serving on conservation authority boards, while Milton Mayor Gord Krantz received a $6,372 per diem for being board member of the Niagara Escarpment Commission.

The pandemic continues to result in some savings for the regional council. According to the staff report, the board spent significantly less on mileage and conference attendance throughout 2021 than before COVID-19 arrived. Collectively, counselors spent just $20,115 on conferences, down from more than $130,000 in 2019. Likewise, mileage claims dropped to $551 for 2021, from around $9,000 the year before the pandemic. .

Regional council members are also paid by the local municipalities they serve – figures that are reported separately by Halton’s four towns.
